The Evolution of my Engagement Ring

I remember high school...sitting in study hall with a few friends at a computer ogling large, princess cut engagement rings. Rings that had fake personality. By fake personality, I mean they were busy enough to be interesting but seemed empty and manufactured.

As I grew older, my hippie-ness and love for all things old/vintage evolved as well.  But for some reason my picture perfect lifeless ring never changed.  As Nick and I started talking more and more about our future together and an eventual engagement, I did more research into rings.  This is when my perfect ring became tainted.  All of a sudden, it was critical to me that my ring not be a "blood diamond".  I informed Nick that I wanted a Canadian diamond, which are ethically mined, or a moissanite.  Moissanite is a lab created diamond which in my head is perfect but if you had suggested that to me five years ago, I would have looked at you appalled.  "A fake diamond?  Not on my hand, thank you very much."  The fact of the matter is that moissanite diamonds look exactly the same and why should that even matter....why do you even need a diamond engagement ring in the first place?  Because the Man tells you that's what you need...but I digress.  If you want to learn more about moissanite:  go here.  Because of the nature of the mining, Canadian (or any other ethical mining areas) diamonds are more expensive.  Moissanite is cheaper than natural diamonds.  I also informed Nick that I didn't want a very expensive ring.  I would be afraid to wear it.  What's the point of a huge ring?  To show everyone that you have money?  Thanks but I'm not that materialistic.

There are other types of rings that would have fit into my category of ethically appropriate rings which I always kept Nick in the loop of. An antique ring would be wonderful.  I started learning more about the categories of rings and the era they were created in.  I fell in love with art deco jewelry in general, not just the engagement rings.

At one point, I had seen and learned just about everything I needed to know on the jewelry I would even consider.  I had told Nick all the things I would like and why they were important to me.  In the end though, it would be his decision and I must say, he done good!  When Nick proposed, .I was so excited to hear that it came from an antique/estate jewelry store in upstate New York.

Today I have been engaged for over four months.  I have yet to lose my ring and still regularly try on the matching wedding band, not so patiently waiting for the day when I can really wear it.  I still look at it with excitement and hope I will always feel that rush of glee when I look at it.  I often find myself thinking of the woman who wore it before I did, wondering what her story was and hoping that it was a happy one.  Since I got it, we have had happy and sad moments, moments where it was dunked in paint, fawned over my family and friends, and lovingly slipped over my finger by a wonderful man.
Here is the ring the night he proposed. :)

Monogram Fun, School Break

I have been so crazy busy with school I haven't had time to craft which is really depressing.  Yesterday my last class of the day was canceled so I took that hour to make something fun! I have been wanting to make a monogram for Nick and I to display at the wedding and maybe display in our future home.

I started with two black wooden letters.  Mom and I got them on one of our garage sale excursions.   They came in a big box full of letters that Mom got to make something (she still doesn't know what she wants to make...wonder where I get that from?).  I managed to snag the N and the A from her to make part of the monogram.

I outlined the letters (backward) on scrapbook paper.  I cleaned off the letters because they were a little dusty.  Then I mod podged the heck out of those little guys!  My original plan was to simply have the striped paper but my mod podge skills are...lacking.  I ended up with wrinkles and air pockets.

So I had to adjust my vision.  I took the left over paper and cut it into chunks.  I put these chunks over the areas that were the worst and it became an eclectic array of stripes in all different directions.
Here is the finished product!  My N and A are finished and I love them!  The whole project was less than a dollar!

So you may be curious...what about the O?  Well, I am going to make a felt flower wreath...which makes an O!  Interested in how it might look?  Check this how-to out!

Check List Lovin'

So in the last few weeks of school...a check list is a necessity.  This year I have switched from my much loved planner to Google Calendar.  I've been slacking on filling out my planner over the last month or so.  In reality, I'm probably focusing on what needs to be done during the specific week and not much else.  Although I haven't been filling out my planner religiously like I normally do, I have been getting stuff done.  But it scares not to have things written down...so one day during a boring lecture in my law class I wrote a much needed check list (I never do other work in class.  I am still ashamed that I did this.).

Here's a few of the items I found crucial:
Law and Politics
(15 page) Research Paper Draft
Review Essay #2
Review Essay #3
Revise Research Paper
Final-Take home (essay)

Methods
Field Experience #3 paper work
Unit Plan!!! (Big Deal)
Portfolio

Soviet Russia
"Fire" Quiz
Final-take home (essay) (Big, big deal)

Chinese History
Research Paper-Women in Communist China
Final Test

Ed. Class
Third Test
Read book 1
Read book 2
Final Exam

Being able to scratch things off my list is such a big relief!  The physical act of the check is a catharsis to my overwhelmed self.  As I was writing this I was thinking about check lists for the wedding.  Of course I will use them like crazy!  The Knot has a check list that is rather intimidating and I find generic and a form of the Wedding Industrial Complex telling me what kind of wedding I should have.
Here's a few things from their list:
Engagement photos (yeah right...) Here's our engagement picture.  Taken with my camera...self timer baby!

Choose Bridesmaids' dresses, accessories, and shoes.  Well, they are grownups and can pick out their own clothes.  Originally I told them they needed black dresses (of their choosing) but now I'm open to whatever they feel comfortable in.

Send out rehearsal dinner invites...puhlease!
#1-no rehearsal dinner. Intimate breakfast on the day of for our wedding party.
#2- Invites?  How about a phone call?

Ok so I've totally bashed The Knot which is very nice of me.  So here's a few of the items on their check list which are actually important things

Head start on thank yous! (I will need to do this.  I hate thank you cards...and need motivation)

On the day of -"Relax, smile, and enjoy the day!"

Start paperwork on insurance!

So The Knot isn't completely worthless but I will probably stick with my own check list!  Here are a few of my favorite (or most looking forward to) tasks.

Try making vegan cheesecake (with K. Hull!)

Plant Tulips this fall for centerpieces

Continue making felt flowers for bouquets and boutonnieres.

Make banners for Popcorn, photo and food stations

Deserves an "eek"

So I should be studying...for midterms but I have to share this wonderful news.

Nick has his masters in forensic medicine...I say yuck! but whatever.  He doesn't really want to do anything with that degree which is cool with me.  Don't do it if you don't love it!  So he applied to medical school.  At last count, it was five ranging from Maine to Kansas.  I told him I would follow him wherever he ended up.  Very Scarlett O'Hara of me, I know but we've spent almost two years in a long distance relationship and I'm sick of it!  So I have researched teaching requirements in all five states.

The school he really wanted is in Des Moines.  He has a sister and brother who are/have been in med school there so he knows the ropes.  We were starting to lose hope because he hadn't gotten an interview from anyone...until today.

Des Moines wants an interview next week.  So he will be coming home last minute during my spring break...oh so perfect timing...and I will get to see my fiance!  We have both been super stressed recently with the wedding, money and school that we really needed this pick-me-up.

Using Local Vendors

It feels like this blog has turned into a wedding blog....my bad.  It seems as though the wedding has dominated my free time just with brainstorming ideas...wonderful ideas like in lieu of flower petals, the flower girls hand out candy to the guests.  Once I started planning our "big" wedding, I decided I wanted to use as many local vendors as I could.  There are a lot of reasons for this.  I want to support small business in my area and basically it's a silent protest against corporate weddings (Wedding Industrial Complex).

1. I bought my wedding dress at a small locally owned bridal store.  The owner is an alumnus of the college I'm currently attending. She didn't give me a blank stare when I said I wanted a bridesmaid dress as a wedding dress (even though I didn't get a bridesmaid dress).   I decided to go there because she has a family picture on the store's website and I thought that was cute. :)

2. The invites...I am a little disappointed in myself for this.  We are (most likely) ordering them from an online company.  This is a money saving thing.  I hope to look around locally and see if any companies can match the price.

3.  Linens (table cloths)!  Goodness!  The price of these can add up quickly!  Thankfully I can pick my sister's brain...she got married almost three years ago.  We will go with a local dry cleaning company who has a decent price for the table cloths.

4. Food is another sore spot for me.  The best price we can get is from Hyvee...which although a chain grocery store, it is an Iowa company and is "employee owned" but I might just be grasping at straws.

5. Alcohol....oh lovely alcohol.  First of all, I have no idea how much will be needed.  My sister had 7 kegs at her wedding and they went through all of them!  They will probably also come from Hyvee (liquor store).  Nick and I like wine....box wine.  Franzia....to be exact.  If money weren't an issue, I would get wine from Eagles Landing Winery.  It's an Iowa winery that has some delicious wines!

6. I am most proud of our venue!  It is a county park so my money is going to support my local park system.  Plus the building is simply gorgeous!

So my local wedding has hit a few road bumps but I have the best of intentions!

Wedding Tradition

Wedding traditions...love em or hate em, they are there!  But as a history chick, I have to explain some of the traditions.  Do you have any traditions you love...or despise?  Let me hear them!

White Dress-
Blame that on Queen Victoria and her middle class values!

Veil-
Roman Brides hid from evil Spirits

Wedding Cake-
If you ask me, it's an excuse for cake but there is meaning behind it!
Bride cuts it first...to ensure the couple will have children.
Don't want kids?  Don't let your missus cut the cake!

Honeymoon-
Lasts till you are preggo!

Engagement ring on forth finger?
It contains your love vein.  Awww sweet!

Rain?  Good or bad?
The jury is still out...I'm going with good luck because some marriages need a little rainy luck!

Are you a crafty lady making your own dress?
I say more kudos to you!  I am jealous of your ambition and talent....but according to legend, every stitch you sew on your wedding dress is one tear during your marriage.  Hopefully your dress and marriage will be seamless.

Wedding Invite Dreams

This is most likely what our wedding invitation will look like.  (The date is not the actual date)  It's a postcard!  We have done this for a number of reasons
1. What is the point of having an invitation inside an envelope inside another envelope?  Such a waste of paper!  I'm trying to save the earth!
2.  It's cheaper!  Each is around 20 cents plus postage which is 28 cents each.
3. Almost everyone we know has internet access and they will be able to RSVP on our wedsite.

Obviously, I would love something different.  But funds are limited and to be honest...who really cares about the invitation?  It gets thrown away anyway...so who cares?

But here are a few ideas I love:

Nick and I love XKCD!  It would be fun to turn these Save The Dates from offbeatbride into an invte!
Plus this!  Dana from BrokeAssBride had these madlib response cards!  I love them so very much!

Totally open to suggestions!  Let me know your ideas...as long as they are cheap cheap cheap. :)

Hey Ya!...Weddin' tunes

Now, I can't pretend to have any clue about music.  Nick is the music expert in our relationship.  I have already told him he is completely in charge of all playlists.  He is for sure a music elitist!  He knows just about everything about indie music.  He plays guitar and is a wonderful singer.

Nick singing for a friend's wedding.

But I do have an opinion about something and I told him the other day that I knew what song I wanted and he had no say in it!  I am a Scrubs fanatic!!  Love me some scrub a dub!  And I want to walk down the aisle to Ted's version of "Hey Ya" by OutKast

Wedding Dress Shop Shop

Today I went shopping for my wedding dress.  My biggest goal was my budget...$300 which is a lot of money to me.  I went with a few girls from school who were dress crazy!  I wasn't planning on choosing a dress today...just scoping things out.

I tried on about ten or so dresses.  My original plan was to get a white bridesmaid dress.  Until I tried on one dress that I fell in love with...and it was only $199.  It was on clearance (discontinued line) and the only one they had.  Of course, I couldn't leave the dress then and risk it being gone.

So I bought the dress.

Now I can't show you the dress but I can show you some of the ones I didn't get (that were like hundreds of dollars out of my price range but were still beautiful)

"Picture Perfect" Proposal

We had a very personal proposal that incorporated a tradition that we created.  Nick (Mr. O) did a wonderful job of surprising me and being all around sneaky!!! My mom pointed out to me a few weeks ago that our local newspaper was having a Perfect Proposal Contest...

Nick was so very excited! "We have to enter," he said.  So last week one night Nick and I sat down and wrote our story in 100 words.  I got a call from the paper on Tuesday saying we were one of the finalists!   So yesterday I went into the paper and they videotaped Nick (via webcam) and I telling our story.

The voting started last night!  If you would like to vote for us, that would be wonderful!!  We are the last option entitled "Picture Perfect"

MY wedding

Nick and I are unique which means our wedding will be pretty unique as well.

I'm not going to lie to you...I've been planning our wedding for about four months.  I created our wedding binder a while ago!

Our (Nick has been actively involved) original idea was to go to Grand Superior  with our immediate family (around 25 people) for a simple wedding.  Eventually we would have a big open house at a park in our home town.  Now we are talking about eloping.  We would send out announcements asking people if they would help us celebrate our one or five year anniversary with a party instead of a reception.

When I started planning our wedding, I went to The Knot where they gave me a huge check list.  Now I'm a list kind of girl.  When I go on vacation, I make a list of what I'm taking but also a list of what I'm going to wear everyday.  But some of this stuff was ridiculous!  If you are looking for a good wedding checklist, look at offbeat bride's checklist.

After searching the internet, I learned that a boring, traditional white wedding isn't a requirement.  So now I have daily reading requirements that include:

What have these amazing women taught me?   Our wedding is ours and we can do what we want!  It's not about the wedding, it's about the marriage and celebrating the love we have for each other.

Showing Love

I haven't told you this but my mom got a Cricut.  It is really addictive....I love it.  I have been using it almost every day for the last few weeks.  Now, I'm not a scrapbooker and I don't feel brave enough to try to do a serious scrapbook.  But I do have a lot of other projects I have done.

I wanted to celebrate my engagement to Mr. O by making something to show off our photo booth getting engaged pictures.  So I took a plain IKEA frame we had laying around and some left over paper.  I bought one piece of paper at the Rustic Corner.  Here is what I came up with.

.
Our colors are black, white, and pink plus the felt flowers with buttons I'm making.  The flowers aren't felt though.  12-20-09 is the date we got engaged.  So I created a very personal celebration of our relationship

.
The whole project cost two dollars.

What's Going on, Man?

Where have I been?!  Well it has been a crazy couple months....seriously I haven't posted in almost two months!  My goodness!  Bad Angelala!!

Well, I had to finish the fall semester at school after a big ol' flare.  Anyone with college and an illness...I commend you!  But I did it!!  After school ended, I went to see Mr. O in Philly for three weeks.

He proposed on my third day there!  He proposed at El Vez (an awesome funky Mexican restaurant).  They have a fun old fashioned photo booth that we always take advantage of.  After a Pink Cadillac Margarita, I was a little tipsy.  We got into the booth and I was smiling at the camera.  Mr O said "Are you ready?" to which I replied "yeah" still looking at the camera with my big smile.  Then he pulled out the ring box.  Here's the first picture the camera took.

How surprised do I look?

So now I get to plan a wedding.  Not sure when or how many people will be there but we are going to have it.  So I decided I wanted to make my own bouquet out of felt flowers.  Princess Lasertron is pretty much my idol right now.  I want our wedding to be as DIY as possible for two reasons.
1. It's cheaper.
2. It puts our stamp on it.  Mr. O and I are individuals and I want our wedding to show that.

So over vacation I started making flowers in general and once I got home I was totally in love with my flowers and felt crafties.  So in order to make money for the wedding (and hopefully after) I started selling them on etsy.

There's not a lot there but that's it.
